"So, what do you do?"

This is a question I encounter frequently, posed by clients and even my own family members. It seems that my job description always leaves room for curiosity.

Here's the breakdown:

  • Education in Design: I acquired a comprehensive understanding of graphic design and communication principles during my college years. This encompassed learning about composition, balance, color theory, page layout, typography, as well as delving into the rich history of art, architecture, and design.

  • Tools of the Trade: Graphic designers are like skilled tradespeople, adept at utilizing specific software to accomplish their tasks. Personally, I am well-versed in the Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign.

I bring these skills together to create. My primary focus lies in branding, although I also collaborate with large corporations as a contracted designer. I develop graphics for national advertising and social media campaigns, though unfortunately, I am bound by non-disclosure agreements that prevent me from showcasing that specific work. However, you can explore my portfolio page to see a selection of recent projects.

"How much will this cost me?"

"How long have you been doing this?"

I have been honing my craft for over twelve years. It all began in 2008 when I started freelancing while still in art school. I had the privilege of working under the guidance of Bill Vann, one of the most esteemed professionals in St. Louis. He entrusted me with projects while I was taking his graphic design course. I continued freelancing throughout my time as a student and subsequently spent three years working full-time at a design agency following my graduation. In August 2016, I took the leap and founded Melanie Layer Creative, embarking on an exciting journey that has shaped my career ever since.
